What do they look like on the reverse side?

The jackets and vests are completely reversible. The "inside" layer (or lining layer) features a cotton print that complements the color of the outside garment design. Customers also have the option of mailing me a favorite fabric for the lining.

The thread-textured design is visible from either side. China Coats and vests have a frog closure sewn to the "outside" of the garment. This can still be buttoned closed when reversed, but keep in mind that much of the frog won't show.

The 4-button jackets and side button jackets have buttons sewn on both the outside and inside of the jacket.

How do I care for my garment?

The designs are completely machine washable. They have already been washed and dried once during the construction process, so there is nothing to be afraid of. In fact, the dryer helps maintain the garment's 3-d appearance. Occasionally the collage design edges will ravel slightly. If this bothers you, you can simply snip off the loose threads as needed. I recommend using "Woolite for Dark Fabrics" or any other mild detergent, and fabric softener in the dryer cycle.

What you should know before you consider placing an order

I can't emphasize enough that these garments are worn best on people who like to wear un-constructed, artsy clothing, and who give themselves a lot of latitude with fit. If you are very particular about your jackets fitting in a precise way (i.e. bust darts, etc.) this may not be the site for you. The decorative edge stitching along the hem is impossible to rip out, so once the jacket is complete it is next to impossible to alter them. If you are unhappy with the fit after receiving your garment, you may return it within five days for a refund. However, you will be out the $25 order fee and the cost of postage.

If you choose to place an order, I will use my best creative energy to make you something unique and wonderful, with attention to good design and impeccable workmanship. I find that some of my favorite pieces were commissioned by people who said "I love what you do. I like this particular color combination. Just do what you think will look best."

What will the design on my garment look like?

Remember, no two garments are exactly alike - this is art! However, the designs on your garment will be similar to what you see on this web site.

When placing the order (regardless of the jacket style that you prefer) let me know which collage designs most appeal to you. (i.e. "I like the three squares down the back of your autumn jacket. - can you do something like that on the China Coat?)

How do I choose a size?

There is absolutely no correlation between my sizing system and any other garment maker in the world, so please read this carefully. The sizing also varies between garment styles. For instance, if you have purchased a size medium China Coat from me in the past, you would not necessarily wear a size medium vest.

Your best bet is to take your measurements wearing whatever you would normally wear under your jacket. The bust measurement is the most important part. Look in the mirror to make sure the tape measure is going across the fullest part of your bust, and is not drooping downwards across your back . And be honest!

Note: I have seen the tiniest women purchase the largest jackets I have, because they like a huge, artsy kind of fit. It's all up to you. So read all of this carefully, and contact me if you are still unsure.)

Sizing for China Coat

Note: This is based on a fairly fitted look. Personally, I think they look better when they are a little larger (the model of the China Coat is wearing one size larger than her measurements say she should). If you like things a little bit roomy, go one size larger. I normally buy a size 6/8, and I like the fit of the medium China Coat.

Finished back length of most jackets (unless you specify differently) is approximately 25 inches.

NOTE: The model of the red and black jacket is wearing one size smaller than she should be. The jacket is not meant to be worn quite that snug.

What about sleeve length?

I design the garments so that for the average woman, the sleeve is turned back at the cuff, exposing approximately 1-2" of the lining fabric. I am nearly 5'9" tall and have rather long arms, so I am not able to turn back the sleeves. If you are very tall, please specify how many inches you would like me to add on to your sleeve length. I do not print the sleeve length, because the garments have a dropped shoulder or a dolman sleeve, which hits each person differently.

How do a choose a color combination?

All jackets and vests are made with black, 100°x6 cotton fabric. The decorative designs are created in the color family of your choice, with two to eight different fabrics being used on each garment.

Options:

Autumn colors (see "autumn” 4-button jacket, and autumn vest with checked lining.)

Reds (see "red" four button jacket)

Blues (various shades of blue.)

Bright pink/turquoise (see pink and blue side button jacket.)

Plums and Teals

Your own - feel free to mail me a few large scraps or 1/8 yard pieces of 100% cotton fabric.

What is your Return Policy?

Items purchased at my art fairs are not returnable. Most special orders may be returned within 5 days of the date that you have received it for a refund (less a $25 order fee and your initial shipping and handling charge!) Merchandise must be un-used and in it's original packaging. If you intend to return an order, you must e-mail or call me first to notify me. Return shipping charges and insurance are your responsibility. I do not refund shipping charges, no matter what the reason.

Any highly specialized order would not be returnable (such as extra short sleeves, a very odd color combination, etc.)

How do I place an order?

First, print out and partially complete the order form on this web site. Before you mail in your order, send me an email describing what it is that you are interested in. Be as specific as possible with size, color combination, and style. 1 can get back to you at this point with a price quote.

Then, mail me your order form, along with your method of payment. I cannot start working on your order until I have received a payment in full. I will not cash your check or process your credit card payment until your order is complete, but I will process it prior to shipment. Most orders will take at least four weeks to construct.
